Dangote Petroleum Refinery Awards Scholarships to 473 Students... Donates Furniture, Educational Materials to Host Communities

Joy and elation enveloped the Idotun Community Junior High School, a suburb of Lekki, on Thursday when Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, in partnership with Dangote Fertilisers Limited, awarded scholarships to 473 students from 10 secondary schools and 7 tertiary institutions. In addition, the company donated eight hundred and four (804) tables and chairs to secondary schools in their host communities of Ibeju-Lekki.

Students, parents, teachers, and community leaders expressed their immense joy as the scholarship certificates were presented to the beneficiaries, alongside educational materials, including textbooks and notebooks, as part of the 5th Edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme.

Group Vice President of Oil & Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, remarked that the event symbolised a shared vision—a partnership between Dangote Industries and the host communities, designed to build a foundation for sustained growth, one that is rooted in education, innovation, and opportunity.

He further emphasised that the initiative is not merely a celebration of achievements but a reaffirmation of the group's commitment to nurturing potential, empowering communities, and shaping a brighter future for the leaders of tomorrow.

"Education, as we all know, is the passport to the future. At Dangote, we believe that education is not just a privilege but a right that every child deserves. This belief has fueled our dedication to supporting students and schools in our host communities since the year 2019 when we launched the Scholarship Award Programme as a key pillar of our Community Development Plan, with year-on-year progress," he said.

Praising the students for their academic dedication, which he acknowledged has resulted in remarkable growth over the years, Mr. Edwin highlighted the impressive year-on-year progress—from 56 students in 2019 to 450 beneficiaries in 2024. He stated that the company is deeply inspired by their determination and is confident that the resources provided will empower them to realise their dreams.

He also noted that the decision to donate the 804 tables and chairs to schools was part of the company’s broader commitment to enhancing the learning environment. This gesture, he emphasised, is a testament to the company’s dedication to ensuring that every child has access to a conducive environment for learning, where they can grow, dream, and thrive.

"To the scholars here today, you are at the heart of our initiatives. Your dreams, aspirations, and hard work inspire us to continue making a difference. As you embark on your academic journeys, remember that the support you receive today is a seed sown in fertile ground. Nurture it with dedication, perseverance, and a spirit of excellence, and it will yield remarkable fruits in your future.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our community leaders, dedicated school administrators who work tirelessly to ensure the success of these initiatives. Your partnership and support are invaluable, and we are honored to work alongside you in empowering the next generation," he added.

The Managing Director of Dangote Industries Free Zone Development Company (DIFZDC), Olayinka Akande, urged the beneficiaries to uphold excellence, which he identified as one of the core values of Dangote Industries Limited. Emphasising the importance of dedication and diligence, he encouraged the students to aim high, noting that with such attributes, some of them could rise to become governors, ministers, captains of industry, or even the next 'Edwin' in the future.

The Head of Social Performance at Dangote Petroleum & Petrochemicals, Ogunleye Mojisola, highlighted that the education intervention is one of the four pillars of the Community Development Plan, which was jointly designed with the community. Reflecting on the scheme’s success since its inception in 2019, Ogunleye expressed gratitude to the management for consistently providing the necessary resources to sustain the programme.

"The increase in the number of beneficiaries each year is a clear indication that the initiative is fulfilling its purpose, motivating students to study hard and achieve academic excellence," she remarked.

The Aro of Lekki Kingdom, Chief Adewale Salami, who represented the Oni of Lekki, conveyed his appreciation for the intervention, affirming that the company is helping to shape the future of the community. He also expressed the kingdom’s continued support for Dangote Industries Limited.

The Chairman of the Lekki Coastal Area Development Association, Alhaji Wasiu Ayeola, praised the founder and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, for transforming what was once a hunting ground of rabbits and lizards into a multibillion-dollar investment that benefits not only the local community and Lagos but also Nigeria and the world. He emphasised that education is the most effective way to shape the future of the community.

Several beneficiaries, including Atibere Peter from Lagos State University, Dauda Omolara from Community Senior High School, Magbon Segun, and Ganiu Ayomide from Community Senior High School, Akodo, among others, expressed their heartfelt gratitude. They noted that the scholarship and support would motivate them to study harder and alleviate the financial burden on their parents and guardians.

Aliko Dangote Hails IBB: ‘You’re the Architect of Private Sector in Nigeria’... Donates N8bn to Presidential Library, Pledges N2bn Annually Until Completion

The President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has praised former Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, popularly known as IBB, for implementing policies that liberated the private sector in Nigeria during his regime.

Dangote made this statement on Thursday during the unveiling of the book “A Journey in Service”, the autobiography of the former Head of State. The event also served as a fundraiser for the IBB Presidential Library.

Africa’s wealthiest man donated N8 billion to the IBB Presidential Library, to be paid at N2 billion annually over the four years allocated for the project’s completion. He further pledged that if the project extends beyond this timeframe, he would continue to donate N2 billion annually until it is finished.

Dangote, who is the largest employer of labour after the government, commended Babangida for his transformative policies that encouraged Nigerian investors to play prominent roles in the economy. He particularly highlighted the abolition of import licences, which helped stimulate domestic industries. These reforms, among others, ensured that Nigeria now has more private-sector involvement than any other country in Africa. This shift, he said, led to a contribution of 85% of the country’s GDP from the private sector, while the government contributes just 15%.

“Your Excellency, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for all you have done for Nigeria. Many may not realise that you were the architect of the private sector in Nigeria. Anyone in the private sector who has achieved prominence today owes it to you, as you provided us with the necessary licences. In the past, we used to struggle to obtain licences through intermediaries, including Indians,” he said.

Dangote recalled how Babangida’s policies facilitated the growth of Nigerian businesses, enabling them to thrive. “Your Excellency, in 1986, you abolished the requirements for import licences, and it was because of that decision that we were able to reach the highest levels of growth. I recall a day when you granted almost 30 of us banking licences. You also instructed five Nigerians to pay N1 million each for oil blocs.

“Your Excellency, I could continue to list all the reforms you introduced that liberated the private sector, which is why Nigeria has more private sector involvement than any other country in Africa. It is only in Nigeria where government contribution to GDP is a mere 15%, with the remainder being driven by the private sector,” he added while expressing hope that future Nigerian leaders will adopt similar policies for the betterment of the country. “I want to thank you once again, and I am confident that future leaders will continue to follow your example, working closely with the private sector.”

On his contribution to the IBB Presidential Library project, Dangote said, “Your Excellency, based on what I have observed, I believe this project will require at least four years to complete. I would like to contribute N2 billion each year for the next four years, amounting to N8 billion in total. Should the project extend beyond four years, I will continue to contribute N2 billion annually.”

Other prominent Nigerians also pledged contributions to the library’s construction. The Chief Launcher and Founder of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, donated N5 billion, while the co-Chief Launcher and Founder of the TY Danjuma Foundation, Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, donated N3 billion.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chaired the event, remarked that by writing his memoir, Babangida had not only contributed to making history but also to documenting it. However, he cautioned the former military Head of State to expect varied reactions to the book, including good, bad, and ugly ones.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also praised Babangida for the launch of his memoir and stated that Nigeria’s history would be incomplete without the story of the former Head of State.

During the book’s review, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo quoted Babangida as saying that late Moshood Abiola, who contested the 1993 presidential election on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, won the election. However, Babangida described the annulment of the election as the most difficult decision of his life.

“There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements,” Babangida was quoted as saying.

The former military leader noted that while the annulment of the election remained a defining moment in his career, he took solace in the fact that former President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously honoured Abiola with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic title, a recognition reserved for Nigerian presidents.

IGP Egbetokun’s Reforms on Case Transfers, Abuse of Office a Game-Changer – Group

IGP Egbetokun’s Reforms on Case Transfers, Abuse of Office a Game-Changer – Group

The Justice Watch Initiative (JWI) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his bold and transformative reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and professionalism in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

In a statement, the President of JWI, Ilechukwu Obiorah, described the IGP’s recent directives, particularly those addressing indiscriminate case transfers, misuse of police authority in civil matters, and frivolous petitions, as landmark decisions that will reshape policing in Nigeria for the better.

“The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun has once again demonstrated that he is not only a reform-minded leader but a determined and visionary police chief. His insistence on transparency, professionalism, and accountability as the pillars of policing in Nigeria is a strong statement that the Nigeria Police Force is undergoing genuine transformation. These new directives are far-reaching and timely, and we at Justice Watch Initiative (JWI) fully support his efforts to sanitise the system,” Obiorah stated.

The JWI President lauded the IGP’s stance against the unwarranted transfer of case files, which he described as a practice that has hampered justice delivery and contributed to corruption within the Force.

“For too long, Nigerians have suffered from the endless shuffling of cases from one division to another, leading to undue delays, waste of resources, and outright frustration for victims. This unwholesome practice has also allowed some unscrupulous officers to exploit complainants financially. By putting an end to this anomaly, the IGP has shown his deep understanding of the issues affecting policing and his commitment to solving them,”  he said.

Obiorah also praised the IGP’s order barring officers from meddling in civil disputes, particularly matters of land ownership, which are often manipulated to serve vested interests.

“For decades, Nigerians have watched in dismay as the police are wrongfully used to settle civil disputes. This has damaged the credibility of the Force and eroded public trust. By clarifying that the police should not intervene in purely civil matters except where there is a criminal element, the IGP has demonstrated leadership and integrity. His directive that State Commissioners of Police must take full responsibility for all investigations is a game-changer that will ensure greater accountability,” he said.

The JWI President further commended the IGP’s introduction of stricter regulations on petitions, which now require complainants to declare the authenticity of their claims to curb the rising trend of false and malicious petitions.

“This is a brilliant step toward ensuring that justice is not weaponized for personal vendettas. Too often, powerful individuals use fraudulent petitions to harass and intimidate innocent citizens, dragging them through unnecessary police investigations. The IGP’s insistence that petitioners must declare the authenticity of their complaints and will be sanctioned if they provide false information is a strong deterrent against such abuse. This move will free up police resources and allow officers to focus on real crimes.”

Obiorah saluted IGP Egbetokun’s overall commitment to police reform, describing him as a leader determined to polish the image of the Force and make officers work harder in line with international best practices.

“IGP Egbetokun is not just making speeches, he is implementing real, actionable reforms that will fundamentally change the way policing is done in Nigeria. His zero tolerance for corruption, his push for transparency, and his resolve to hold officers accountable for their actions show that he is a leader with a clear vision and an unshakable commitment to excellence.

"Under his leadership, officers and men of the Force are now being driven to work harder, more ethically, and with greater professionalism. He is restoring pride in the uniform and ensuring that the Nigeria Police is seen as a force for good, not fear. This is the kind of leadership we need to build a more credible, effective, and citizen-friendly police system in Nigeria,”  he said.

The Justice Watch Initiative (JWI) pledged to continue supporting the IGP’s reforms while urging all police personnel to embrace the changes and work diligently to improve security and justice in the country.

Obiorah concluded by calling on civil society organizations, legal practitioners, the media and the general public to support the IGP’s transformation agenda, stressing that a reformed police force is critical to Nigeria’s progress and development.

“We must all play our part in ensuring that these reforms are not only announced but also fully implemented. The Nigeria Police Force belongs to all of us, and we must work together to ensure that it functions as an institution of justice, discipline, and service to the people,”  he concluded.

Tokunbo Wahab, Leading Lagos Towards Environmental Transformation... By Sunday Adebayo

Lagos State, Nigeria's bustling economic powerhouse, has long grappled with complex environmental challenges. From waste management and flooding to pollution and urban sprawl, the city's sustainability has often hung in the balance.

However, under the stewardship of Honorable Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Lagos is experiencing a remarkable transformation.

Since his appointment in September 2023, Wahab has emerged as a dynamic and visionary leader, implementing groundbreaking policies and projects to address the state’s environmental issues.

His hands-on approach, strategic foresight, and commitment to community engagement have set Lagos on a path toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.

Waste management has been a perennial problem in Lagos, but Wahab's innovative "Waste-to-Wealth" program is changing the narrative. By establishing modern recycling plants, the program transforms the city’s daily waste into valuable resources such as compost, energy, and recyclable materials. This initiative not only reduces waste but also creates economic opportunities by integrating informal waste pickers into the formal economy.

In a further bold move, Wahab introduced a ban on single-use plastics, set to take full effect this January 2025. To support this transition, his ministry has launched extensive public education campaigns, encouraging residents and businesses to adopt sustainable alternatives and rethink their reliance on plastics.

Flooding, a significant threat to Lagosians, has received Wahab's focused attention. His administration has undertaken proactive measures, including clearing major drainage systems in flood-prone areas such as the Lord Chosen Canal and Orchid Corridor.

These efforts have not only alleviated immediate flooding risks but also laid the groundwork for long-term resilience against climate-related challenges.

Recognizing the importance of nature in urban living, Wahab has prioritized the restoration and expansion of Lagos’ green spaces. Through the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), his administration has launched tree-planting campaigns and rehabilitated parks, improving air quality and providing recreational areas for residents. These efforts underscore his belief that a vibrant city must balance urban development with ecological preservation.

Wahab has made environmental law enforcement a cornerstone of his tenure. Crackdowns on noise pollution, illegal dumping, and sanitation violations have brought much-needed relief to Lagosians. By holding offenders accountable, he is fostering a culture of compliance that ensures a healthier and more livable city for all.

One of Wahab’s most significant accomplishments is securing international support for Lagos’ environmental goals. A €120 million partnership with the Dutch government will establish a waste-to-energy facility capable of processing 2,500 to 3,000 tons of waste daily.

This project promises to not only reduce the city’s waste burden but also contribute to its energy needs, demonstrating Wahab's ability to align local challenges with global solutions.

Honorable Tokunbo Wahab’s leadership is reshaping Lagos’ environmental landscape. From waste-to-wealth programs and flood mitigation to enforcing laws and restoring green spaces, his initiatives address the city’s immediate concerns while laying a foundation for long-term sustainability. His tenure is a testament to the power of visionary governance.

As Lagosians witness the tangible benefits of his efforts, Wahab continues to inspire hope and action, proving that with purposeful leadership, a cleaner, greener Lagos is not just an aspiration but an achievable reality.

This article celebrates Tokunbo Wahab’s achievements and invites every Lagosian to join in building a sustainable future for the city they call home.

Nnamdi Kanu challenges Justice Nyako on jurisdiction to try him....Adjourns "terrorism case" indefinitely

Binta Nyako, judge of a federal high court in Abuja, has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), indefinitely.

Nyako adjourned the suit on Monday following Kanu’s insistence that the judge cannot preside over his case since she had recused herself.

On September 24, Nyako recused herself from Kanu’s case after an oral application by the defendant.

“I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the chief judge,” she had said.

Kanu directly told Nyako that he no longer had confidence in her handling of his trial.

However, John Tsoho, chief judge of the federal high court, returned the file to Nyako on the ground that Kanu’s application must be formally brought before the court through a motion on notice.

Consequently, in a letter dated December 5, 2024, and addressed to the deputy chief registrar, Adegboyega Awomolo, the prosecution counsel, asked the court to fix a date for the commencement of trial.

Opposing the request for a trial date, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s counsel, in a letter dated December 9, 2024 said the ruling of the judge recusing herself remains valid.

Subsequently, Ejimakor asked that the case be transferred to a federal high court in the south-east if no judge in Abuja is willing to preside over it.

ROWDY COURT SESSION

At the resumed session on February 10, Awomolo told the court that the prosecution counsel have filed and served all necessary processes in the suit and that they were ready to proceed with trial.

However, Ejimakor insisted that was not the issue before the court.

Nyako explained that although she does not want to preside over the case, the chief judge has refused her recusal and directed the defendant to file a formal motion asking for a reassignment of the case to another judge.

While the lawyers in the suit argued over whether a formal motion was required, Kanu interjected: “I want to speak”, he hollered.

Asked by the judge if he wanted to take over from his lawyer, the defendant said: “Yes, I want to take over.”

The separatist said he was only in court because of the respect he had for the court, but that Nyako no longer had the jurisdiction to preside over his case following her recusal in September.

Raging at the prosecution counsel, Kanu said: “A grown-up man like you who should be in the village and who should be making sure that things are done properly is here subverting the law.”

Addressing the judge, he bellowed: “I don’t recognise the authority of this court to preside over my case. Everything you said here is meaningless to me.

“Why is it that when it comes to my case, everything is turned upside-down?”

He said the memo sent by the chief judge returning the case file to Nyako cannot override the enrolled order of the court made on September 24.

Told by the judge that he was at liberty to appeal the directive of the chief judge, Kanu said: “If the chief judge disagrees, he should appeal the decision.

“You cannot preside over this case, not now, not today, not ever. You stand recused and you must leave my case. I don’t need you in my case. You are biased. Tell the chief judge that Nnamdi Kanu said so.

“This is not a court of law, this is a shrine to injustice and I will not subject myself to it.”

In his submission, Awomolo asked the court to fix a date for trial.

“In view of the fact that the defendant has indicated that he would not make a formal application, I apply that your lordship gives us a definite date for trial,” Awomolo prayed.

“Because of money they are paying you from the AGF’s office, a grown-up man like you is here supporting evil. The rule of law says you should go on appeal,” Kanu replied.

“The same chief justice writing this stupid memo, I have recused him before. He sat on appeal, I took him to NJC and recused him. Why is he insisting on this one? He wants to embarrass your lordship by asking her to sit on this case.”

In her ruling, Nyako said: “The only decision I can make right now is that in the light of what is happening now in court, I am going to adjourn this case sine die (indefinitely).”

“You have no jurisdiction to adjourn anything. None whatsoever. You cannot make an order without jurisdiction. The memo from the chief judge cannot confer jurisdiction upon you,” Kanu barked at the judge.
